The Basics of Baccarat

Baccarat

If you’ve ever been to a sticky-floor California card room or a tuxedo-laden casino in Monaco, odds are that you’ve seen the game of baccarat. Made famous by Sean Connery in the James Bond movies, this classic casino game is played with a large table and nine cards. In baccarat, you place a bet on either the player or banker hand, and then wait for the dealer to deal. The goal is to win by having a hand that is closer to nine than the other hand. The value of a hand is the sum of all the cards dealt, but only the rightmost digit counts.

The rules of baccarat are simple at first, but get a bit more complicated as the game progresses. After all bets have been placed, the dealer will deal two cards to the banker and to the player. The dealer will then compare the hands and decide if the player should receive a third card. Usually, the dealer will award a third card to the player when the total of the first two cards is 8 or 9. The banker will also get a third card when their initial total is 7 or less.

After the banker and player have each received two cards, the dealer will announce the winner of the round. Regardless of which hand wins, the winnings are split equally between the player and banker. There are a few exceptions to this rule, though. If the banker’s hand has a total of 8 or 9, the hand is considered a “natural” and ends the game immediately. If the banker’s hand is 9 and the player’s hand has a total of 8, then the dealer will declare a tie.

When a hand is scored, the points are added up. All the cards are ranked, with 10s and face cards being worth 0 points, cards numbered 1 through 9 counting as their face value, and aces counting as one point. When the total points reach double digits, the second digit is dropped.

As with any casino game, you’ll need a plan before entering the Baccarat tables. You should know how much you’re willing to lose and when to quit, and it’s important to stick to that plan. It’s also wise to set a win limit for yourself, so you don’t spend more than you’re comfortable with.
