The Basics of Roullete

Roullete is a casino game that’s easy for beginners to learn, but offers surprising depth and excitement for those who play with serious intent. While the basic rules are simple, understanding how different types of bets impact your odds is key to making smart decisions at the table.

Roulette is French for “little wheel.” The game involves a spinning, white ball that will land in one of the 36 numbers (plus the 0 on American roulette wheels) on the table’s layout. When you place your bets, choose whether to wager on individual numbers or a combination of groups. Each type of bet carries its own house edge, payouts and probability of hitting.

The croupier (the dealer) then throws the ball into the wheel. Players continue to wrap up their bets until the croupier announces, “No more bets.” Then everyone watches as the ball bounces around and eventually settles into one of the pockets marked with a number. If you made a bet on that number, you’ve won!

To determine where to place your chips on the roulette table, refer to the layout on the left of the table. Generally, your best bet is on “outside” bets, which cover large groups of numbers (a row or column of 3, for instance). These bets have lower house edges and better odds of winning than inside bets.

The wheel itself is a solid wooden disk slightly convex in shape. Its rim contains metal partitions, called frets, or “canoes” by roulette croupiers, that are painted alternately red and black. Thirty-six of these compartments are numbered consecutively from 1 to 36; the 37th, on European-style wheels, is green and carries the sign 0. Two other green sections on an American-style wheel carry the signs 0 and 00.

The wheel has been around for more than 300 years, though fanciful stories credit it with having been invented in the 17th century by the mathematician Blaise Pascal in his quest to create a perpetual motion machine. It was only a few decades later that the game of roulette evolved into its current form, with its modern roulette wheel and table layout. Since then, the game has offered glamour, mystery and high-rewards to casino-goers around the world.
